Loading a two-horse trailer for a weekend rodeo is no time to guess at a rating. The 2027 Grand Wagoneer reaches up to 10,000 lb when properly equipped, and on the standard wheelbase a 4x4 gets there by adding the Heavy-Duty Trailer-Tow Package, whose 3.92 rear axle makes the difference. The Upland, sold as a standard-wheelbase 4x4, comes with that axle and matches the figure without adding the package.

Wheelbase, drive and axle each shape a distinct rating for the stretched Grand Wagoneer L, the 4x2 models and 4x4s that skip the package; plan any trailer around that number. Any 4x4 other than the Upland can add the package, in either body length. The owner's manual also sets out hitch guidance: carry 10 percent of the trailer's weight on the tongue, and use a weight-distributing hitch once the trailer weighs 5,000 lb or more.

Heavy-duty engine cooling comes standard across the 2027 Grand Wagoneer lineup, which counts for a lot on a long summer pull with a loaded trailer. Peak torque of 468 lb-ft arrives at 3,500 rpm and peak output of 420 hp at 5,200 rpm, with an 8-speed automatic doing the shifting. Per the owner's manual, 91-octane or higher premium delivers optimal performance, especially in hot weather or with a trailer behind, while regular 87-octane is the grade the engine runs on.

Spring wind across US-84 can push a trailer around; Trailer Sway Control, part of Electronic Stability Control per the owner's manual, can brake individual wheels and cut engine power to help settle it. Pick the Upland, or add the Heavy-Duty Trailer-Tow Package to another 4x4, and the 4x4 system becomes Quadra-Drive II: an electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential backed by a two-speed, low-range transfer case. Selec-Speed Control joins them, holding a set pace of up to 5 mph in 4WD Low.

On the 123-inch wheelbase, the 2027 Grand Wagoneer carries 27.9 cubic feet behind the third row, 70.8 behind the second and up to 116.7 cubic feet with both rear rows folded. Saddles, tack and duffels can ride inside, out of the wind and dust, secured to standard cargo tie-down loops, and every trim also has a 115-volt outlet fed by a 150-watt inverter.

An extra 14.7 cubic feet behind the third row, 42.6 in all, comes with the Grand Wagoneer L, whose body runs 12 inches longer on a wheelbase stretched 7 inches. Either length keeps the same 36.6 inches of third-row legroom. Standard seating holds seven, using twin captain's chairs in row two, and eight-passenger seating via a bench is optional, with the Summit Reserve the one exception.
